A Guided Contemplative Experience at Halekulani Dojo

Discover a moment of stillness within the tranquil setting of Halekulani Dojo. Tea and Tatami is a guided contemplative experience led by Martial Arts Master Ray Carbullido, inviting guests to slow down, reconnect with the present moment, and cultivate mindfulness through breath, awareness, and quiet reflection.

During the guided meditation, guests are invited to embrace the peaceful atmosphere of the dojo and enjoy the delicate Japanese green tea, Sakura Sencha, in collaboration with Tea Chest Hawaiʻi. This light tea blended with cherry blossoms has been thoughtfully selected to complement the experience, encouraging a mindful appreciation of flavor and presence.

Designed for all experience levels, Tea and Tatami offers a restorative opportunity to step away from the pace of daily life and embody the harmony of meditation and tea in the peaceful surroundings of Halekulani Dojo.

With a maximum of eight participants, this session offers a focused and personalized environment for deeper observation and self-cultivation. (60 min) – $75

Join us on Friday, March 20th at 5:00pm for an exclusive opening of Explorations of Self with martial arts master and artist Ray Carbullido as he introduces his immersive gallery installation and Visiting Master experience at Halekulani. In this presentation, Ray shares the philosophy behind his work, reflecting on an artistic journey that unfolds alongside and through his martial arts practice. He explores how internal cultivation and movement give form to the relationship between the visible and invisible aspects of our being.

The talk will be followed by a live sword demonstration, through which Ray translates principles from rare internal cultivation traditions, including Baguazhang and Tengu swordsmanship, traditions traditionally shared within closed lineages, into direct, embodied experience. This demonstration highlights foundational human movement and internal awareness, revealing how clarity, centeredness, and vitality emerge through practice. Participants will then be guided on a gallery tour of the exhibition, including selections from the Light Mandala series and the participatory Portal installation, with context that connects the visual work to the practices that generated it.

This event is complimentary and open to the public; parking included for attendees.
